Somatics for Anxious Children
Calming the Mind
Ages 8-12 years.
Wednesday Evenings: 7-8:30pm
Starting: May 25th -June 15th, 2016
Description: This group will focus on somatic anxiety, instead of cognitive anxiety. A bottom up approach, rather than top down approach. Anxiety manifests in the body as an intense physical response, such as muscle tension, muscle aches, headaches, rapid breathing/hyperventilation, sweating, shaking, nausea, and others physical symptoms.
Anxiety is also accompanied by cognitive anxiety, such as fear, repetitive negative thoughts, difficulty concentrating, confusion and depersonalization.
In this group we will focus on somatic anxiety as a way for children to better able to calm and regulate themselves emotionally. We will use body oriented approaches such as bouncing on exercise balls, stretching with breathe, meditation and somatic exercises to release muscle tension. Children will get better at identifying their somatic anxiety and utilizing strategies to decrease anxiety and intrusive thought patterns. This is a fun and relaxing group.
Receipts for coverage for extended health plans are available for counselling services.
Minimum of 4 participants are needed to run group.
